Tuesday Tiny Writing Tips #4 – Environment/Surroundings (Exception to Tip #3)

#TTWT - Tuesday Tiny Writing Tip #4 by Dilyana Kyoseva (CatMint5 on wattpad)

This is an exception to Tip #3 – describing environment/surroundings.

It is usually best to introduce the environment by interacting with it instead of enlisting what’s there, but… Let’s say your character walks into a room and tries to collect and memorize as much data about it as possible in as little time as possible. In this case, they won’t be poetic about their environment; they will try to make a mental list of what is there so they could quickly memorize it.

For example:

“There were three windows, one of which open, the other covered by thick black curtains;  the white walls were bare save from a large round mirror; the desk and the chair behind it – the only one in the room – matched the curtains and carpet; a fake palm tree stuck out from a pot in the left corner, the container the same beige color as the floor.”
