Tuesday Tiny Writing Tip #28 – Describing a Scene

Last week I compiled a few questions that would help you find plot holes; this week I’m going to enlist a few more, but this time to help you describe a scene. Let’s imagine that your character sets foot into their new home for the first time. Now tell me:

  • What does the character see?
  • What do they hear?
  • Any particular scents?
  • Do they touch anything and what is the texture (rough, soft, smooth, grainy, etc.)?
  • Are they or the objects they interact with cold, warm, hot, freezing?
  • How does all of this make them feel (safe, uneasy, nostalgic, anxious, frightened, etc.)?

For more help on portraying your character’s surroundings, check out Tuesday Tiny Writing Tips #3 and #4.
