Last week, I explained to you what best sheets are; this week I’m giving you a list of good ones available online for free, plus a list of books (one also free) that would help you structure your story. Before that though, I want to thank Ashley Claudy who shared two beat sheets in the Wattpad to Published facebook group when I asked for suggestions.
Beat Sheets:
- Six beat sheets on Jami Gold’s website. Included: Save the Cat Beat Sheet (based on Blake Snyder’s teachings); Story Engineering Beat Sheet (based on Larry Brooks’ teachings); Master Beat Sheet (combining Save the Cat and Story Engineering); Jami Gold’s Basic Beat Sheet; Six Stage Plot Structure Beat Sheet (based on Michael Hauge’s teachings); Jami Gold’s Romance Beat Sheet. The page also has writing checklists and Scrivener templates.
- Romancing the Beat by Gwen Hayes. This link will take you to the FREE cheat sheet for her not-free book of the same name. I’ve downloaded the sheet and it looks good on its own; I still plan to buy the book at some point though, and get more details on the topic.
- The 7-point Plot System by Dan Wells. I found about the beat sheet on Belinda Crawford’s site where there’s a blurry jpg image, but also downloadable pdf and MS Excel versions.

** The links from the Book Depository are affiliate links. That means that if you click them and buy the book, I get a tiny percentage of the money you spent. You’d pay the same price whether you click an affiliate link or not; the only difference for you is the warm, fuzzy feeling you get, knowing that you are adding to my book funds as I plan to spend the money I make from affiliate links on buying books.
I hope these are useful to you!
If you know of other beat sheets or good books on structuring a novel/novella/short story, tell us about them in the comments!
